“First Mile” refers to the network connection from the exchange to the customer premises and focuses on the speed between your business and the exchange. Ethernet First Mile utilizes multiple dedicated copper pairs (two strands of copper wire) that are then bonded together to get a higher bandwidth capacity.

FAQs About EFM

How Fast Is EFM?

With an EFM configuration there can be a hypothetical maximum speed of 100mbps, but realistically you end up with 2 – 5 mbps per pair used, so an 8 wire (4 pair) service would expect speeds between 8/8 – 20/20. Note – the speeds on EFM are not guaranteed speeds, but are a best effort speed based on your distance from the exchange and quality of copper in your area. Why Is Ethernet First Mile Better Than ADSL?

Ethernet first mile (EFM) in Australia uses existing copper network infrastructure (aka standard telephone lines). It allows the transfer of high speed data over resilient network made up of multiple copper lines. Not only does it deliver symmetric data (same speed up and down), it delivers resiliency in connectivity. This resiliency is achieved because of the multiple lines uses. If there is a fault on a particular line the other services remaining service, which reduces down time and removes packet loss from the equation.
